Plover, WI: Although women are in the minority when it comes to commercial driver training, they soon learn that they have become an important member of the trucking industry. For those women who receive their certificate in driver training at Arkansas State University – Newport’s Commercial Driver Training Institute, (ASUN/ACDTI) they will also become a member of Women In Trucking, Inc. Women In Trucking Association (WIT) (www.WomenInTrucking.org) was recently formed to encourage the employment of women in the trucking industry, promote their accomplishments and minimize obstacles faced by women in trucking. Bentley Wallace, Director of the Arkansas Commercial Driver Training Institute (www.asun.edu/ACDTI) would like to see more women consider a career in trucking, and after completing training, he wants to see that each one finds success and long term opportunities. Mr. Wallace approached Harvey Beech, of Freight Systems, Inc, based in North Little Rock, Arkansas and asked him to sponsor a membership in Women In Trucking for every female driver. Mr. Beech and his co-owners of Freight Sytems, Inc. are the largest independent operator provider to US Xpress, Inc. and will be funding the first year membership dues for all female graduates from the ACDTI program. “ASU-Newport is excited to have the support of Freight Systems, Inc. in providing this opportunity for our women graduates,” Wallace said, “and in addition to offering memberships in Women In Trucking, we will encourage all drivers to become involved in the organization by incorporating information into our curriculum.” Ellen Voie, WIT Chairwoman of the Board of Directors, commented on the partnership, “Our goal is to bring more women into the trucking industry, and with the support of driver training schools, such as ASU-Newport, we can encourage and assist women who wish to make trucking their career choice.” Arkansas State University Newport and Freight Systems, Inc have also agreed to become corporate members of Women In Trucking. |
