Sewell Awarded January 2012 Trucker Buddy of the Month

Roy Sewell has been named January Trucker Buddy of the Month after being nominated by his Trucker Buddy teacher, Michele Chilenski and her third grade class at Olde Sawmill Elementary in Dublin, Ohio.  The two have been paired for two years.

“Roy has gone out of his way for my class,” stated Ms. Chilenski.  “Not only did he come to the class Veteran’s Day Program but he has also come on a class field trip and sent treats for Halloween.”

This year, Sewell gave the class a miniature replica of his truck which Chilenski says her students enjoyed because of the numerous occasions he has brought his truck for the students to climb inside and shown them how the lift in the back works.  “Now they get to see it and be reminded of the times they were sitting in the same seat,” she says.

According to Chilenski, Sewell has done an exceptional job of teaching her students good work ethics and responsibility. “He will write back to every student that sends him a question, including examples of emails from satisfied customers,” she says. “He also teaches the students about how hard work pays off.  Plus, he has taught the students about the trucking industry, some of the possible dangers of driving a truck and really given them a good idea of what it is like when he is out on the road.”

Sewell sends pictures to the class of his travels and has enabled the class to use map reading skills by letting them know where he goes.  The students learn about geography from following his travels.  When he visited the class he told the students his stories and experiences from being out on the road.

“He encourages good behavior, academics and makes the children feel special and important,” raves Chilenski referring to his hands-on approach with the class.

Trucker Buddy International, an independent, non-profit 501(c) (3) organization, often called the number one trucking image campaign in North America, has helped educate schoolchildren and introduce educators to the trucking industry.  This gives them the world through the eyes of a professional truck driver.  The Trucker Buddy program helps to educate and mentor schoolchildren via a pen pal relationship between professional truck drivers and children in grades K-8 as supervised by their teachers.

After an extensive screening process, the professional truck drivers are matched with a class and as directed by the teacher, drivers share news about their travels with their class. Students write letters and send pictures to their drivers. Students' skills in reading, writing, geography, mathematics, social studies, and history are enhanced and learning is made fun.

Since 1992, Trucker Buddy International has helped educate over a million schoolchildren and introduced them to caring, compassionate men and women, professional truck drivers.  The on-going success of the program is due to driver volunteers, participating teachers and the contributions of sponsors.  There is no cost to the drivers or teachers to participate in the program. The Trucker Buddy of the Month is sponsored by Daimler Truck Products and includes, Freightliner Trucks, Western Star Trucks and Detroit. Each class of the winning TBOM receives a gift pack of snack from Frito-Lay.  The Trucker Buddy program is funded entirely by sponsorships and donations.

PTDI Certification Benefits Programs Facing Changes in a Technological Age

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 8, 2012

Contact: David Heller, PTDI Program Director

PTDI Certification Benefits Programs Facing Changes

in a Technological Age

Alexandria, Virginia – As technology changes the face of the truck driving industry, programs offering courses certified by the Professional Truck Driver Institute (PTDI) are reaping the benefits, according to driver training program administrators from Wisconsin to North Carolina.

“The dynamics of individuals seeking jobs has changed,” said Robert Behnke, Dept. Chair, Commercial Vehicle Education, at Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton, Wis. “I see people choosing this as a career path are more technologically savvy, but they don’t have a specific background in trucking, nor have they even grown up in the farm industry and been around big vehicles. We’re seeing folks from different backgrounds—accountants, doctors, and lawyers—coming into the industry because they’ve seen a tremendous amount of change in what they were doing and they are looking for a career change. Companies want to be assured that these people have specific truck driver training. I believe PTDI has played a part in that, because when it comes down to companies asking about training, safety is always number one.”

Kim Carsten, school director for Commercial Driver Training in West Babylon, N.Y., has also seen a change in the background of her students in recent years. “I’ve seen financial people, people from Wall Street, from the computer technology field, coming to our program,” Carsten said. “They need jobs, and they see from the advertisements that there is always a need for CDL drivers and that these are good paying jobs for entry-level drivers.”

And the fact that students are more technologically savvy only benefits programs with PTDI certification, as Carsten pointed out. “In the past three years, I have seen an increase in the amount of students who know about PTDI, and much of that is a result of their Internet research and the fact that motor carriers mention PTDI on their website,” she said. “A lot of our students do research the PTDI website themselves and when they complete our critique at the end of our program, they say they came here because of PTDI. Students definitely have become savvy about industry standards, and about the industry in general, because of the Internet.”

Rudy Fox, director of truck driver training for Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute, which received PTDI course recertification at two locations and initial certification at a third, has noted similar interest in his programs. “Definitely the economy has led more people to the trucking industry. Some are changing careers not by choice but because they’ve lost their jobs. We’re seeing that especially in our area in North Carolina where the industry is textiles and furniture, and that industry’s almost gone, so with unemployment here close to 10 percent, people have to turn to trucking. Companies are seeking us out because they know we’re giving our students quality training. We have more recruiters now than we ever have in the past few years because of PTDI. Our reputation has grown quite well in western North Carolina; all the major trucking companies recognize our program, and one of the reasons is the PTDI certification.”

Insurance companies as well are recognizing the significance of PTDI certification. “A lot of insurance companies, from what I understand, recommend that trucking companies hire students from PTDI programs,” Fox said. “Most trucking companies are greatly influenced by insurance companies, so they can’t hire student drivers that don’t have quality training.”

Although Behnke said it may seem “unrealistic for someone to make that type of career change, especially later in life,” he believes “the industry is turning a corner with positive changes and more emphasis on the trucking industry’s image. I think there are a lot of great changes coming our way as people look at the trucking industry as more of a career than just a job.”

Carsten, who has been with Commercial Driver Training for 28 years, adds, “I definitely think that PTDI’s making a difference in the type of drivers we’re putting on the road.”

The six truck driver training programs that recently received recertification are Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute in Hudson and Hickory, N.C.; Commercial Driver Training Inc., in West Babylon, N.Y.; Delaware Technical and Community College in Georgetown, Del.; Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton, Wis.; and Lebanon County Career School in Lebanon, Pennsylvania.  Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute in Dallas, N.C., received initial course certification.

PTDI is a national, nonprofit organization established for the twofold purpose of developing uniform industry skill, curriculum, and certification standards for entry-level truck driver training and motor carrier driver finishing programs, and certifying entry-level truck driver training courses at public and private schools and driver finishing programs at carriers for compliance with PTDI standards.  PTDI is based in Alexandria, Virginia.

Covenant Transport Unveils
$10K Annual Equity Bonus for
HAZMAT Team Owner Operators

(Chattanooga, TN) - Covenant Transport today announced a new Owner Operator HAZMAT Team Equity Bonus that will offer an extra $10,000 per year to assist HAZMAT team owner operators in replacing equipment.

"Our company has decided that owner operators shouldn't be in it all alone when it comes to paying to replace their tractors," says Covenant Transport's John Arthur Daniel, vice president for capacity development. "The $80,000 truck expenditure from just a few years ago has suddenly turned into a $120,000 expenditure and that hits owner operators hard. So we want to step up and help them out when it's time for them to replace their equipment."

Daniel explains that all HAZMAT owner operator teams who run at least 35 loads per quarter will now be eligible for a $2,500 per quarter bonus payout on an ongoing basis. "This is not a one-time payout," he said. "Those who qualify will continue to receive the bonus for as long as they drive for Covenant." Lease Purchase drivers will be eligible for the bonus after their trucks are paid out.

"We've always been known for providing our company drivers with one of the newest fleets in the business. But we care about all our drivers. We want to

position owner operators to do just as well-to be able to purchase reliable, efficient and late-model equipment for their deliveries," says Daniel. "This helps our contractors and it benefits us, too. By seeing that our HAZMAT owner operator teams stay in good, solid equipment, we're helping them be the best they can be, avoid CSA violations, and continue to provide our customers with the best service in the industry. Our goal is for everyone on the Covenant team to be a long-term success."

Trucker Buddy Launches Trucking Mentors Program

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

April 20, 2012

Contact:  Randy Schwartzenburg

randy@truckerbuddy.org

205-248-1261

Trucker Buddy Launches Trucking Mentors Program

Trucker Buddy International is launching a new program called Trucking Mentors and is directed at teaching high school students to drive safely around big rig trucks.  Trucking Mentors matches professional drivers with a high school located either locally or along the route of the driver.  The driver then visits the high school once or twice a year to teach young drivers about the issues of driving along-side a big rig truck.

Many local and short run regional drivers can’t participate in Trucker Buddy but still want to volunteer to help their community.  A program like Trucking Mentors allows them to visit the high school and educate students on highway safety.  The goal is to save lives and build a positive image of the trucking industry among teenage drivers.

The current 2,600 Trucker Buddies will have the opportunity to be both a Trucker Buddy to elementary students and a Trucking Mentor to high school students. Other drivers will be recruited to help in the mission.  There will be no charge to be a Trucking Mentor, background checks will be done on all Trucking Mentors. Matches can be made by the driver contacting their local school or can be matched with one of the high schools that sign up.

“I believe that as an industry we have a responsibility to help our communities understand how to be safe around a truck and continue to improve our image.  That is especially important for teens beginning to take the responsibility of driving a car,” says Randy Schwartzenburg, executive director, Trucker Buddy International. “Trucking Mentors will not only save lives but will increase respect between all the parties.  Having both Trucker Buddies and Trucking Mentors teaching students about our industry not only helps the students drive more safely but helps everyone understand our industry’s impact on our nation.   Saving lives, improving our image and building respect are why launching Trucking Mentors is so important.”

For more information on Trucking Mentors go to www.truckingmentors.org.

The Trucker Buddy program is funded entirely through sponsorships and donations.

Trucker Buddy press releases are provided by ACS, a Xerox Company.

Dr. Barry Asmus to deliver keynote address at

inaugural Great West Fleet Executive Conference

LAS VEGAS, Nev., (April 2012) – Dr. Barry Asmus, senior economist with the National Center for Policy Analysis will share his insights on powering America’s energy future with attendees during the inaugural Great West Fleet Executive Conference, June 13-14, 2012, at the Sands Expo & Convention Center.

Named by USA Today as one of the five most requested speakers in the nation, Asmus is an advocate of free market economics, including removing laws that restrict the development of domestic energy. By 2020, Asmus estimates America will consume 125 quads of energy, a 25 percent shortfall from the current supply. Scientists say the U.S. has more than 200 billion barrels of oil and 2,000 trillion cubic feet of natural gas recoverable with today’s technology. When fully developed, Asmus argues, we would eliminate completely the 10 million barrels of foreign oil imported daily.

The Great West Fleet Executive Conference is the only conference that helps carriers meet the challenges of doing business in the West. Spanning two half-days prior to the opening of The Great West Truck Show, the conference offers carrier executives real-world insights into key areas, including:

·       What you need to know about complying with California regulations – Chris Shimoda, manager of Environmental Policy, California Trucking Association

·       What leading carriers are doing to successfully conduct business in the West – Scott Blevins, president and CEO, Mountain Valley Express and Noel Massie, president UPS Central California District

·       How to finance environmentally compliant equipment – Matt Schrap, president, California Fleet Solutions and vice president government programs, Crossroads Equipment Lease and Finance

·       Does natural gas make sense for the long haul?  Tim Carmichael, president, California Natural Gas Vehicle Coalition

·       An update on engine makers’ existing technologies and how they plan to meet upcoming regulations – Moderated by Glen Kedzie, vice president, energy & environmental counsel, American Trucking Associations and featuring Brad Williamson, manager of engine and component marketing, Daimler Trucks North America; Craig Brewster, vice president, PACCAR and David McKenna, director, powertrain sales and marketing, Mack Trucks

Presented by Commercial Carrier Journal and the California Trucking Association, the Great West Fleet Executive Conference will be held June 13-14, 2012, the day prior to and the opening day of The Great West Truck Show. Registration begins at 11 a.m., Wednesday, followed by a networking lunch. A networking reception will be held immediately following the program on Wednesday. The conference ends at noon on Thursday when The Great West Truck Show opens. For more information or to register, go to www.fleetconference.com.

The event is sponsored by Bridgestone, Chevron and Freightliner.

Acclaimed Country Music Artist John Anderson

To Perform at the Great American Trucking Show

Free Friday Night Concert Sponsored by Mobil Delvac

TUSCALOOSA, ALA. (February 2012) – Multi-award winning singer John Anderson will take the stage at the Dallas Convention Center in a free concert for Great American Trucking Show attendees sponsored by the team behind Mobil Delvac heavy-duty diesel engine oil on Friday, Aug. 24th, 2012.

Anderson helped bring country music back to its roots in the early 1980s with hits such as Swingin', which was named the Country Music Association’s 1983 Song of the Year. Other hits from that era included Wild and Blue, I'm Just an Old Chunk of Coal, 1959, I Just Came Home to Count the Memories and Black Sheep. Those hits showcased Anderson’s instantly recognizable vocal style – a mixture of honky-tonk fervor, rockabilly/outlaw gusto, sly, tongue-in-cheek humor, and just a hint of rock n' roll swagger.

Anderson returned to prominence in the 1990s with the release of his platinum-plus album, Seminole Wind. The lead single from that album, Straight Tequila Night, went to No. 1 across the board on every country chart. The album’s title tune also reached No. 1. Anderson followed Seminole Wind with five more critically acclaimed albums, spawning hits such as, Money In the Bank, I’ve Got it Made, I Wish I Could Have Been There, Let Go of the Stone, Bend it ‘Til it Breaks, Mississippi Moon and Somebody Slap Me.

“We are thrilled to have country music star John Anderson at the Great American Trucking Show,” says Alan K. Sims, vice president/executive director of events for Randall-Reilly, which produces the show. “Thanks once again to our partners at Mobil Delvac for making such high caliber entertainment available free of charge to truck drivers who attend GATS.”

“For the 10th year in a row, the Mobil Delvac team would like to thank American truckers for their hard work and dedication that keeps the trucking industry rolling year after year,” says Marci Crigger, Commercial Vehicle Lubricants Marketing Advisor, ExxonMobil Lubricants and Petroleum Specialties Company, an affiliate of Exxon Mobil Corporation.  “We are thrilled to bring such a talented performer who has influenced many of today’s country artists to the deserving truckers and their families.”

John Anderson will appear Friday, Aug. 24th at 5:30 p.m., at the Dallas Convention Center. Tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, beginning Friday at 9:00 a.m., under the Mobil Delvac tent in the GATS main registration lobby.

The 2012 Great American Trucking Show promises to be an event not to be missed, with more than 500 exhibitors, the Custom Rigs Pride & Polish National Championship, SmartSessions educational sessions and a Driver Recruitment Pavilion. Once again, GATS will host the Commercial Vehicle Outlook Conference, produced in conjunction with Randall-Reilly and the Heavy Duty Manufacturers Association, prior to the opening of the show.
