Dear {FName},

Remember when you could tell how much somebody liked you by the size of the Valentine they sent you? When was the last time you sent someone a really big Valentine? When was the last time you received a really big Valentine?

Did you remember yesterday was Valentine’s Day?

Are you kicking yourself right now because you forgot?

Don’t worry; you can make up for it on President’s Day by sending someone a really big Washington!

Better yet, send us a really big email like JLB did.

Subject: Truck Driving

I would like to say a few words about AP’s letter on today's truck driving as a job.

I will agree with the fact that those who are running the industry don’t have a clue on what it is like on the road for a driver today. Traffic, HOS, dispatchers who could not drive a fast car from A to B in the time they want us to drive our trucks with toll roads, weather and all the other things that keep us from being on time.

How about the shippers and receivers who want you to wait because they aren't ready and then want you to hurry because they want to go home. As AP said, there are many things out there that just wear you down.

I also have trouble with attitudes, you know like truck drivers are someone who couldn't work at a real job, or are big bullies who will run you off the road because they are always in a hurry to get to the next truck stop to flirt with the waitress.

How about the time away from home and your family, and how you miss the things the kids are doing and knowing how hard it is for your wife to keep the car and the house together because you won't be home for another week, or your youngest telling you how much she misses you, and that she loves you and is praying for you on the road. These are the things that really wear you down.

Now, on the other hand, there are companies who care for their drivers just as if they were family. They have dispatchers who have been behind the wheel and over the road and know what a little snow and wind will do to the traffic and roads, or know what sitting on I-80 in the middle of Wyoming waiting for a repair truck is like. What about the older drivers who pass on the tips and tricks that have kept them running without an accident because of something they know how to do. Or the drivers who are go out of their way to help someone who has broken down on the roadway. I have been at an accident were a trucker risked his life to save another and then drove a 1000 miles without thinking twice about what he had done.

It just seems that the bad out numbers the good. Driving a truck is more than just a job, and it does get into your blood. I grew up as a kid who had a Dad who drove and went on to owning a number of trucks with other drivers working for him. He died behind the wheel after a blow out accident.

You see I love trucks, the feel, the smell, everything about them. I do see the way trucking is going and it worries me. I also see the way our country is going and it hasn't been getting any better.

What to do? Do as TruckDriver.com has pointed out, VOTE! Make it known that we need to change things, you may need to even get up close and talk to your politicians so they know what you think. Work like you are being watched, do your best. Listen to those who have 35 + years over the road and then pass it on to the ones who are coming up behind you. Support groups who care for making truckers safe and aren't out to only make money for themselves.

For me, I will keep praying for our country and those who keep America going, the Truckers!

Editor: Thanks JLB - anyone else care to comment?

Apparently, Mardi Gras isn't the attraction it once was. According to The TruckDriver.com Super Fat Tuesday Survey only twenty percent of you have ever attended Mardi Gras. Maybe we should have gone the other way and found out how many of you have ever voted in a primary.

And speaking of Primaries, is it just us, or is it getting more and more difficult to tell the Liberals from the Conservatives, the Democrats from the Republicans, the politicians from the pollsters.

Take The TruckDriver.com Political Party Party survey and let us know where you stand.

Until next time, keep on truckin' and please drive safely.
