Dear {FName},

Good evening Mr. and Mrs. Driver and all the trucks on the road! (A little Walter Winchell paraphrasement, for those who might remember him)

This just in from the TCA…

2009 National Truck Driver Appreciation Week

CDL Holders to Receive Freebies and Special Week-long Coupon Offers

As National Truck Driver Appreciation Week (NTDAW) approaches (November 1-7, 2009), the Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) has thought of a unique way to recognize and thank truck drivers for their steady commitment to delivering North America’s goods. Along with promotional partners Randall-Reilly Publishing, Flying J, and Pilot Travel Centers, TCA will offer CDL holders special week-long coupon offers.

TCA President Chris Burruss and Chairman Kevin Burch announced the unprecedented new idea during TCA’s Independent Contractor Division Annual Meeting, held August 20-21 in conjunction with the Great American Trucking Show at the Dallas Convention Center in Dallas, Texas.

“Our concept is to offer nationwide coupons that will last throughout the entire week,” said Burch. “Nothing to this scale has ever been done for Driver Appreciation Week before.”

Burruss added:  “In this economy, drivers will appreciate the extra savings, just as we appreciate them for their hard work all year long!”

Two travel plazas have already made commitments to the project. Flying J will provide double points on fuel purchases and triple points on meal purchases throughout the week (points will be added when drivers swipe their Flying J Frequent Fueler membership cards with each purchase). Pilot will be offering a Free Upsize on any Combo. It is hoped that other travel plazas will join the effort as NTDAW approaches.

Copies of the special week-long coupons will be available on TCA’s Web site, www.truckload.org, as well as in the October issues of CCJ, Truckers News, Overdrive, and three driver-recruitment digests:  Owner Operator, Big Rig Owner, and Driving Force. TCA will also get the word out to drivers by asking its member carriers to put special banner ads on their Web sites and to run promotional articles in their newsletters.

It’s back to school time!

Tips for Sharing the Road with School Buses

Believe it or not, children are safer traveling in school buses than in any other type of motor vehicle. However, every year, school bus accidents happen because many drivers forget about some school bus safety basics.

Of the few fatalities that happen each year, most occur in the "danger zone,” the 10-foot area surrounding a bus where the bus driver and other drivers are unable to see children.

Because of this, most states have specific laws that require all vehicles to come to a halt when a school bus has its stop sign out and its red lights flashing. These signals indicate that children are getting on or off the bus. When you’re sharing the road with school buses, remember these rules:

DO NOT pass a school bus until the red lights and signals are turned off.

ALWAYS stop when traveling in the same direction as the bus.

CHECK the law in your state regarding traveling in the opposite direction across a divided road. (Some states require that you stop then, too.)

NEVER pass on the right side of the bus. Besides being illegal, this is where children enter and exit. Doing so can have tragic results.

In the TruckDriver.com GATS Survey we asked if you would be attending the Great American Trucking Show this year.

Only 20% of you replied YES.

Naturally, we were there and while attendance did seem low, (with the economy still in a state of flux, we suspect attendance is down at events everywhere this year) we had a great time and the recruiters we spoke to seemed happy with both the quantity and quality of the drivers they met.

Speaking of the economy, take the TruckDriver.com Miles & Miles Survey and let us know how your economy is doing.

Until next time, keep on truckin' and please drive safely.

a' we gonna do what they say can't be done
We've got a long way to go and a short time to get there
I'm east bound just watch ol' Bandit run”
