American Trucking Associations Announces Finalists
for 2011-2012 America’s Road Team
ARLINGTON, Va. – The American Trucking Associations today named 34 professional truck drivers as finalists in the selection process to become Captains on the 2011-2012 America’s Road Team. America’s Road Team, a group of professional truck drivers with superior safety records, was created in 1986 to represent the trucking industry and is sponsored by Volvo Trucks North America.
The 34 professional truck drivers will move on to the final round of the selection process, which will be held Jan. 9-11, 2011 in Arlington, Va. A panel of trucking industry officials and trucking news media will judge the finalists on their knowledge of the trucking industry, their dedication to safety, their ability to communicate trucking’s messages and overall safe driving record.
The three day competition will culminate with a new team of America’s Road Team Captains receiving the signature navy blue Road Team blazer. The Captains then begin their two year term working to share the industry’s message of safety, essentiality, and sustainability with the motoring public, news media, business and community leaders, public officials and their fellow drivers across the nation.
“America’s Road Team Captains are an incredible voice for the trucking industry. They represent the best of the best,” said ATA President and CEO Bill Graves. “The 34 professional drivers selected as finalists have remarkable safety records, are passionate about the industry, and are dedicated to making our nation’s highways safer. ATA is honored to have these professional drivers participate in this prestigious selection process to become a Captain of the America’s Road Team.”
To be nominated to serve as an America’s Road Team Captain, a professional truck driver must be employed or leased to an ATA member company. Each nominee should have an excellent safety record, and should demonstrate an ability to communicate his or her commitment to safety and passion for the industry. These nominees should portray the professional truck driver in all that they do.
“As candidates who have spent millions of miles behind the wheel, these true professionals bring a unique perspective – and credibility – to our industry’s messages of safety and essentiality,” said Ron Huibers, Senior Vice President for Sales and Marketing, Volvo Trucks North America. “Volvo is proud to recognize their sincere dedication to making our roadways safer places and promoting the positive image of the professional truck driver. We applaud their employers, who demonstrate their commitment to safety and industry image by supporting the America’s Road Team program.”

Mercer Transportation Co.
Mercer Transportion’s corporate headquarters, which has come to be known as Mercertown was founded in Louisville, Kentucky in 1977.
Bill Howard and Jim Stone started managing the Water & Sewer Pipe Division of T.E. Mercer Trucking Co. in Fort Worth, TX during the winter of 1974-1975. This division was separated in July 1977 and began operating at its present location in Louisville, Kentucky as Mercer Transportation Co. At the time, Mercer had one permanent truck and seven employees with I.C.C. authority to haul only commodities originating at or destined to water or sewer pipeline right-of-ways.
Originally, Mercer operated on over a 90% trip lease basis. Trip Lessors enjoyed working with Mercer Agents and Louisville personnel and many requested to sign on permanently. At the urging of Mercer agents, they developed a permanent fleet, which has grown substantially for over 30 years. Since the beginning, Mercer’s basic goal, as outlined in the company’s original policy manual, has remained the same: “To move freight, move it safely, and at fair rates.”
The Mercer headquarters is proud to maintain a family atmosphere that encourages contractors to make themselves at home. Their open door policy welcomes contractors to work directly with their freight coordinator and the Mercer staff.
Mercer Transportation is always looking for dependable owner/operators who are interested in building a successful career. Mercer needs your skills and your equipment to move their freight. So if you're thinking about taking a turn for the better, you've come to the right place! Welcome To Mercertown!
