US Capitol Christmas Tree Arrives in D.C.

The U.S. Capitol Christmas tree arrived in Washington, D.C. on Monday, November 25.

The 2019 Capitol Christmas Tree arrived on the West Lawn, completing its nearly 2,000 mile journey from New Mexico’s Carson National Forest.

This year’s tree hails from the Land of Enchantment. The 60-foot blue spruce rolled up in front of the Capitol on a flatbed truck, then was lifted by crane onto the lawn.

The tree’s journey began in Carson National Forest, where it was cut down last month and made nearly 30 stops in communities along the way. Over the next several days, it is being decorated with thousands of LED lights and ornaments, hand-crafted from recycled material by children from New Mexico.

The Christmas tree lighting ceremony is set for December 4.

Remy Braun of D&D Sexton Named ATA’s Driver of the Year

TruckDriver.com congratulates Remy Braun of D&D Sexton Inc., Carthage, MO, for being named the 2019 ATA Driver of the Year. This national recognition is a tremendous follow up to having been awarded the 2018 Missouri Driver of the Year.

Including his time in the U.S. Army, Remy Braun has been behind the wheel of a truck for 34 years — the last 22 of which as both a driver and trainer for D&D Sexton in Carthage. In addition to accumulating 2.8 million accident-free miles, Remy has made 21 state appearances and three appearances at the National Truck Driving Championships and was nominated by the Missouri Trucking Association.

He was in a company truck when he received a phone call from his boss he’ll never forget…

“I was training at the time, Danny asked me if I was driving and I said I was training,” explained Bruan. “I was sitting in the side seat and he didn’t want to tell me while I was driving because I laughed, I cried — I was just overwhelmed. It was quite an honor.”

In order to be considered for the prestigious title of ATA’s Driver of the Year, you must first be your state’s driver of the month, then your state’s driver of the year.

Candidates are selected from a pool of exceptional state Drivers of the Year submitted by state trucking associations. Each candidate's qualifications are reviewed by a panel of judges. The field of nominees is narrowed down to a group of finalists who are judged by a panel comprised of members from the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance and law enforcement representatives, who selects the award winner.

Call for Nominations:
2020 Driver of the Year Award

Women In Trucking Association (WIT) and Walmart are seeking nominations for the inaugural Women In Trucking Female Driver of the Year award.

The goal of WIT’s Female Driver of the Year award is to recognize outstanding female professional drivers who lead the industry in safety standards while actively work to enhance the public image of the trucking industry. The grand prize winner will be chosen based on safety record, impact on the industry’s image and positive community contributions.

“Celebrating women’s accomplishments is a key aspect of our mission,” says Ellen Voie, WIT president and CEO. “We’re thrilled to honor an outstanding female driver with this new award.”

The contest is open to any female driver or contractor who has safely driven one million consecutive, accident-free miles. A driver must be nominated by the motor carrier by which she is currently leased to or employed. The nominee must have been employed by or leased to and driving for her current trucking company employer for the past three years.

“Walmart is committed to providing women a great workplace to grow their careers and is a proud sponsor of Women In Trucking,” said Bryan Most, vice president of transportation for Walmart and Women In Trucking board member. “We are excited to take this relationship a step further and sponsor Women In Trucking’s first-ever Female Driver of the Year award to recognize and empower women who are making an impact in the transportation industry.”

The inaugural award will be presented to a deserving driver at the 2020 Salute to Women Behind the Wheel event at the Mid America Trucking Show (MATS) in Louisville, Ky. on Friday, March 27. The grand prize winner will be chosen based on her safety record, positive community contributions, and impact on the public image of the trucking industry. She will receive a plaque, commemorative ring and more.
