Do you ever wonder what the Bureau of Labor Statistics has to say about truck drivers? If you do, then you are in luck, you can check out the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook for Truck Drivers and Driver/Sales Workers here.

Recently, NPR’s Talk of the Nation featured a segment on long-haul truck drivers. Special guests were Dan Hanson, a fleet manager with Q Carriers and Steve Russell, vice president at large from the American Trucking Association. The podcast and transcript of the show is available here.

SendOutCards.com Offers Trucker Buddy a Mailing Solution

One of the problems faced by Trucker Buddies, who help to educate and mentor schoolchildren via a pen pal program, is locating greeting cards and postcards at truck and rest stops.  Many times it’s hard to find postage or even a mailbox but by using SendOutCards.com, Trucker Buddy drivers will be able to send their classrooms cards from anywhere in the country just by getting online.  Many drivers send their classrooms a card from the state they are driving in and find it can be difficult to take the time to stop and buy one. Now, they now can go to SendOutCards.com and select the post card they want, type in the message as well as the teacher’s address.  SendOutCards.com does the rest.  For a very small fee, they print the card, address it and then place postage on it to be sent by the post office.  Within days, the teacher receives the card in the mail.

Drivers and teachers can design custom cards by placing pictures of their trucks or pictures of classroom projects on the cards.  Also, due to the generosity of their distributor, a small donation will be given based on the usage.

“This will be a time and expense saver for our drivers.  Locating a post office box, postage and even the card can be very time consuming.  This will effectively end that entire process and give the drivers more opportunity to communicate with the classroom about their travels,” says Randy Schwartzenburg, Trucker Buddy International executive director.

“I have lived the life of a truck driver and I know how difficult it can be to maintain relationships of any kind from the cab of a truck”, says Marilyn Draper, independent distributor for SendOutCards. “With SendOutCards, drivers can share their life experiences with the teachers and the students in the classrooms in a much more convenient way and for a low price.

Trucker Buddy International, an independent, non-profit 501(c) (3) organization, often called the number one trucking image campaign in North America, has helped educate schoolchildren and introduce educators to the trucking industry.  This gives them the world through the eyes of a professional truck driver.  The Trucker Buddy program includes schoolchildren in grades K-8 as supervised by their teachers.

After an extensive screening process, the professional truck drivers are matched with a class and as directed by the teacher, drivers share news about their travels with their class. Students write letters and send pictures to their drivers. Students' skills in reading, writing, geography, mathematics, social studies, and history are enhanced and learning is made fun.

Since 1992, Trucker Buddy International has helped educate over a million schoolchildren and introduced them to caring, compassionate men and women, professional truck drivers.  The on-going success of the program is due to driver volunteers, participating teachers and the contributions of sponsors.  There is no cost to the drivers or teachers to participate in the program. The Trucker Buddy program is funded entirely by sponsorships and donations.
