We hope you took a moment this past week to honor a Veteran. In our humble opinion, America can, and should, do much more for the brave men and women who serve and protect our country.

TCA Invites Carriers to Apply for Trucking’s Weight Loss Showdown
Applications now being accepted through November 30, 2011

The Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) is taking a unique approach to improving the general health of the trucking industry. It has partnered with Lindora Clinic, providers of America’s leading medically based weight-loss and health management wellness programs, to host Trucking’s Weight Loss Showdown, a competition with prize incentives for the fleet and individual who achieve the greatest percentages of weight loss. Carriers wishing to participate may apply now through November 30, 2011, at www.TruckingsWeightLossShowdown.com.

The showdown is scheduled to last 10 weeks, beginning January 24, 2012. It will stress a low-carbohydrate, low-fat, moderate protein menu plan coupled with exercise, nutrition education, and lifestyle changes. Participants will receive weekly phone calls from Lindora nurses, who will instruct them on nutrition education, help boost their morale, discuss their obstacles, and record their weight loss. Each team’s profile and progress to date will be shared with attendees of TCA’s Annual Convention, to be held March 4-7, 2012, at the Gaylord Palms in Kissimmee, Florida. The winners – both fleet and individual – will be announced in May at TCA’s Safety & Security Division Annual Meeting.

The online application for the 10-week showdown asks for basic company demographics, local media contact information, and a brief paragraph about why the carrier should be selected to compete.  Plus, to be able to participate, carriers must be able to recruit 12 participants – six drivers and six office staff.

By January 1, 2012, TCA will announce the 10 fleets that have been selected to compete in the competition. “When we first envisioned this showdown, we were going to start with just five companies with 10 team members each, but enthusiasm has been so great we opened this up to 10 companies with 12 team members each,” said Gary Salisbury, TCA’s chairman and the president and CEO of Fikes Truck Line, Inc., Hope, Arkansas. “Initial reaction to this idea has been tremendous.”

Gary Kermott, president and CEO of Lindora Clinic, said, “We are honored to be partnering with TCA on the First North American Battle of Trucking’s Weight Loss Showdown. Our Lean for Life On-the-Road Program is a uniquely designed weight loss and health management program for the professional truck driver’s lifestyle. Our behavioral approach to creating long-lasting change will have everyone excited to watch these carrier teams feel better, look better, and get healthy. And let’s not forget it will be simply good old-fashioned fun seeing trucking’s competitive spirit in action!”

According to a December 2007 study by the American Dietetic Association, 86 percent of trucking industry professionals were overweight or obese. Though it might be tempting to blame this on truckers’ sedentary jobs, this statistic actually applies to all trucking employees, not just drivers. “This showdown is one way we can help our industry get healthier,” said Chairman Salisbury. “It’s the right thing to do for the folks who sacrifice so much to keep our goods moving.”

Trucker Buddy of the Month
July 2011
Craig Dickason

Craig Dickason’s teacher Laura Conway is a fourth grade teacher from Las Vegas, Nevada.  She and Craig have been working the program since 2002 and have developed a professional relationship that encourages her students to excel in her class. Mrs. Conway states, “I just want to thank you for setting our class up with Mr. Dickason.  He has communicated regularly, sending pictures and post cards.  The students are so excited when I share new communications from him.  The Trucker Buddy program is a real asset in my classroom.”

When Craig takes a class visit to the school he demonstrates the utmost of professionalism and courtesy.  He brings gifts, tells stories and allowed the students to see inside his truck while giving them safety lessons on such areas as blind spots, seat belts and stopping distances. Craig believes that to develop a trusting relationship with the classroom you must be professional but enjoy listening to them too.

Craig is a driver for Primex Plastics and is a long time Trucker Buddy Ambassador.  Ambassadors are experienced Trucker Buddies who help give advice to the program and also help work trade shows across the country.  They are essential to helping the program grow and get better.

Some students wrote letters to support their Trucker Buddy:

“It was nice of you to give us Mr. Dickason as our Trucker Buddy and letting him come to our school.  I had fun looking inside his truck and learning about trucks.”

I am so glad Mr. Dickason brought his truck to the school and was finally able to meet him. It was fun seeing a truck that a real trucker drives. It was a pleasure having him here and it’s super cool to see his truck.”

All I want to say is “Thank You” for setting up the program and for assigning Mr. Dickason to our class and letting him write letters to our class and bringing his truck.  It was a really cool experience.”
