Trucker Buddy Launches Trucking Mentors Program

Trucker Buddy International is launching a new program called Trucking Mentors and is directed at teaching high school students to drive safely around big rig trucks. Trucking Mentors matches professional drivers with a high school located either locally or along the route of the driver. The driver then visits the high school once or twice a year to teach young drivers about the issues of driving along-side a big rig truck.

Many local and short run regional drivers can’t participate in Trucker Buddy but still want to volunteer to help their community. A program like Trucking Mentors allows them to visit the high school and educate students on highway safety. The goal is to save lives and build a positive image of the trucking industry among teenage drivers.

The current 2,600 Trucker Buddies will have the opportunity to be both a Trucker Buddy to elementary students and a Trucking Mentor to high school students. Other drivers will be recruited to help in the mission. There will be no charge to be a Trucking Mentor, background checks will be done on all Trucking Mentors. Matches can be made by the driver contacting their local school or can be matched with one of the high schools that sign up.

“I believe that as an industry we have a responsibility to help our communities understand how to be safe around a truck and continue to improve our image. That is especially important for teens beginning to take the responsibility of driving a car,” says Randy Schwartzenburg, executive director, Trucker Buddy International. “Trucking Mentors will not only save lives but will increase respect between all the parties. Having both Trucker Buddies and Trucking Mentors teaching students about our industry not only helps the students drive more safely but helps everyone understand our industry’s impact on our nation. Saving lives, improving our image and building respect are why launching Trucking Mentors is so important.”

Acclaimed Country Music Artist John Anderson
To Perform at the Great American Trucking Show

Multi-award winning singer John Anderson will take the stage at the Dallas Convention Center in a free concert for Great American Trucking Show attendees sponsored by the team behind Mobil Delvac heavy-duty diesel engine oil on Friday, Aug. 24th, 2012.

Anderson helped bring country music back to its roots in the early 1980s with hits such as Swingin', which was named the Country Music Association’s 1983 Song of the Year. Other hits from that era included Wild and Blue, I'm Just an Old Chunk of Coal, 1959, I Just Came Home to Count the Memories and Black Sheep. Those hits showcased Anderson’s instantly recognizable vocal style – a mixture of honky-tonk fervor, rockabilly/outlaw gusto, sly, tongue-in-cheek humor, and just a hint of rock n' roll swagger.

Anderson returned to prominence in the 1990s with the release of his platinum-plus album, Seminole Wind. The lead single from that album, Straight Tequila Night, went to No. 1 across the board on every country chart. The album’s title tune also reached No. 1. Anderson followed Seminole Wind with five more critically acclaimed albums, spawning hits such as, Money In the Bank, I’ve Got it Made, I Wish I Could Have Been There, Let Go of the Stone, Bend it ‘Til it Breaks, Mississippi Moon and Somebody Slap Me.

“We are thrilled to have country music star John Anderson at the Great American Trucking Show,” says Alan K. Sims, vice president/executive director of events for Randall-Reilly, which produces the show. “Thanks once again to our partners at Mobil Delvac for making such high caliber entertainment available free of charge to truck drivers who attend GATS.”

“For the 10th year in a row, the Mobil Delvac team would like to thank American truckers for their hard work and dedication that keeps the trucking industry rolling year after year,” says Marci Crigger, Commercial Vehicle Lubricants Marketing Advisor, ExxonMobil Lubricants and Petroleum Specialties Company, an affiliate of Exxon Mobil Corporation. “We are thrilled to bring such a talented performer who has influenced many of today’s country artists to the deserving truckers and their families.”

John Anderson will appear Friday, Aug. 24th at 5:30 p.m., at the Dallas Convention Center. Tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, beginning Friday at 9:00 a.m., under the Mobil Delvac tent in the GATS main registration lobby.

The 2012 Great American Trucking Show promises to be an event not to be missed, with more than 500 exhibitors, the Custom Rigs Pride & Polish National Championship, SmartSessions educational sessions and a Driver Recruitment Pavilion. Once again, GATS will host the Commercial Vehicle Outlook Conference, produced in conjunction with Randall-Reilly and the Heavy Duty Manufacturers Association, prior to the opening of the show.
