Dear {FName}, July 1 , 2012

It’s hot! Yesterday we saw a squirrel run down a tree, hit the sidewalk and burst into flames. Not a pretty sight!

In case you were wondering, the highest temperature ever recorded in the United States was 134°F on July 10, 1913 in Death Valley, California. The world's highest official temperature is 136° recorded at El Azizia, Libya, on Sept. 13, 1922.

We’re certain record high temps are being set in a lot states this summer, so stay cool and drink plenty of liquids!

Trucking Industry Confirms: The Economy Has Slowed

The American Trucking Associations’ advanced seasonally adjusted (SA) For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index decreased 0.7% in May after falling 1.1% in April. (April’s loss was the same as ATA reported on May 22.) The latest drop lowered the SA index to 117.8 (2000=100), down from April’s level of 118.7. Compared with May 2011, the SA index was 4.1% higher, the largest year-over-year increase since February 2012. Year-to-date, compared with the same period last year, tonnage was up 3.8%.

The not seasonally adjusted index, which represents the change in tonnage actually hauled by the fleets before any seasonal adjustment, equaled 124.5 in May, which was 6.5% above the previous month.

“Two straight months of contractions is disappointing,” ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello said.  “The drops in tonnage are reflective of the broader economy, which has slowed.” (read on)

Silio and Studney
Trucker Buddies of the Month
April 2012

Frank Silio, a driver/trainer with Covenant Transportation drives in the South Florida region and asked Jill and David Studeny, over the road drivers, to help him with his class. So with the combination of Frank, Jill and David working as a team they began introducing trucking to Lenae Herman's Delprado Elementary School in Boca Raton, Florida.

Ms. Herman talks about her team of Trucker Buddies....

"Last summer Frank and I began planning my educational goals for the 2011-2012 school year.  Frank's enthusiasm, experiences and receptiveness was evident after our first conversation.  Frank who is a truck trainer for Covenant Trucking, in south Florida, immediately invited Jill and David Studeny and their dog Riggs to participate in our year long venture.  The Studeny's began
communicating with the children.  They wrote each child a letter that addressed all of their questions.  Postcards were sent from each state that they traveled to with educational information and trivia about each state.  Emails and photos were sent daily.

They traveled to 42 of the 50 states in the USA.  My students enthusiastically placed flags on a USA map, requested to assemble USA puzzles and work on Geo Safari globes to verify
information that was forwarded by the Studeny's. Amazingly the children can tell you the capital of each state, major highways, climates, products, bordering states and facts that make each
state unique.  The Studney's wanted all fifty states addressed so the program was extended to friend's that live in the states that they did not travel to.  Friends wrote letters and postcards
which completed all fifty states.  Their dedication and commitment to the children and the program was above reproach. In my twenty-nine years of teaching I have never seen the children learn what most adults don't have a clue about. I must also add, that the children wanted to learn to write letters from the inception of the program.  Today they are master writers due to having a purpose for their writing.  During free time the most popular activity is to read the class Trucker Buddy album.  The album is a collection of all letters, photos and postcards.  It is bulging at the seams.

A huge gala welcome, fit for the President took place on Monday April 9th.  Frank arrived at Del Prado at 6:00 to make sure there were no obstacles for the big rig truck.  Frank led the truck of Jill and David Studeny and their dog Riggs into the bus loop . Three hundred students from kindergarten, first and second grade classes greeted Frank Silio, Jill and David Studeny and their dog Riggs.  Songs from Children Sing America and I Want To Be Your Trucker Buddy were blasting.  Children were waving American flags  at the bus loop.  Banners were hung everywhere.  The sea of red, white and blue was fit for the President.  Jill and Riggs jumped out of the truck first.  Both Jill and I started to cry as we embraced one another.  The student excitement was intense. My class presented long stem chocolate roses to Jill in exchange for a hug. Riggs received his #1 Trucker Dog tee shirt and custom made cookie jar.  The Principal of Del Prado Elementary presented school tee-shirts to Jill, David and Frank and made them honorary teachers at Del Prado. School magnets were placed on their trucks.

All students had the opportunity to climb up into the big rigs and sit in the driver's seat, view the living quarters and then view the cargo section of the truck.  A luncheon followed the truck viewing.  My students and our trucker friends had special time for visiting. Baskets filled with unique gifts were presented to our trucker friends. Our buddies were amazed to see the class fifteen foot board that house photos of a year of trucker buddy travel that was sequenced from fall until spring.  They also loved our USA map that was filled with USA flags on the 50 that were traveled to.”

If you would like to help young students excel in school and improve the image of the trucking industry, make a donation. All donations are tax deductible and greatly appreciated.
