Caroline Walradt Named Outstanding Trucker Buddy Teacher

Caroline Walradt, a second grade teacher at Princeton Academy of the Sacred Heart in Princeton, N.J., has been named Trucker Buddy’s Outstanding Teacher following her nomination by K.C. Brau, a Trucker Buddy and driver for Crete Carriers.

“Mrs. Walradt has been a Trucker Buddy teacher and advocate since 1999, utilizing the program in second and third grade course study,” said Brau. “I think she’s a great teacher.”

Her influence and success with the students has been visible to Brau in the improvement of language and writing skills in the letters and notes received from the class. Faithfully sending material written and made by the students, she has also served to keep this driver's enjoyment and satisfaction level with program participation high.

According to Brau, Walradt has utilized state tourist information sent by him in her class assignments, particularly for creative thinking and writing abilities. “Taking the item of their choice, students were encouraged to develop a story around it,” said Brau. Maps provided by a program sponsor are used to help with learning state names, features, and shapes while following the journeys of their Trucker Buddy driver.

In a radio interview (blog radio, Courtney Wilson Show), Walradt proved herself to be an interesting and articulate spokesperson for the Trucker Buddy program.  "I have been very fortunate to have had K.C. as a Trucker Buddy pen pal for almost 8 years now,” she said. “My students look forward to his postcards and letters and have learned a great deal about trucks, geography and staying safe! He becomes a good friend and they miss him when they leave second grade. I am grateful for the TBI program which provides an authentic means for me to teach my students about the United States, letter writing, and the value truckers provide to each and every one of us," stated Walradt.

Sleep Apnea , Anti-Idling laws, The Americans with Disabilities Act and CPAP Use
Derek Hinton -DOTJobHistory.com

I’m not a big city boy and one time as a little boy, my great uncle shot a bear and cooked some of it up. The idea of eating a bear didn’t bother me, but it was different tasting, and fatty. About all I remember is that while chewing, my bite of meat somehow seemed to grow.

This is now the fourth article I’ve written on commercial driving, sleep and sleep apnea and I’m beginning to wonder if taken on a bear of a subject and bitten off more than I can chew.

I typically write articles dealing with DAC Reports, Driving Records, PSP Reports and other commercial driver employment screening issues and regulations and how to be proactive with your career to make sure you make the most money you can and have the type of job you want.

Bob Stanton an over the road driver who has been on a CPAP since 2002 provided much of the information in the last sleep apnea article and dealt with some of the more “nuts and bolts” issues of using a CPAP on the road: electrical requirements, constant voltage and reasonable climate control in the cab. Mr. Stanton points out that there’s more to it than that.

In areas where there are anti-idling laws, CPAP use in all weather conditions would not be possible if an APU or IdleAire was not available.  However: the exact language of anti-idling laws varies from location to location. Some have language that would allow idling for powering a CPAP and some do not. Sleep Apnea is a “disability” as defined in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ADA requires “reasonable accommodations” for persons with disabilities.

WHERE TO GET MORE INFORMATION

Truckers for a Cause - A. W. A. K. E. http://awake.truckersforacause.com is a good source for truck driver-specific information . The American Sleep Apnea Association web site www.apneasupport.org  also is a good place to post questions. Just note in the ASAA forums if the questions relates to a truck driver as answers may differ slightly from a home patient.
