Trucking Moves America Forward Introduces “High-5 and Show Your Pride” Campaign

The Trucking Moves America Forward movement introduces the “High-5 and Show Your Pride” campaign, which will debut at the Great American Trucking Show in Dallas on August 20, and encourages each attendee to donate five dollars to the TMAF movement to reach its goal of one million dollars its first year, emphasizing the pride within the industry.

The second phase of the campaign – “Show Your Pride” – urges industry workers to sign a pledge at the TMAF booth, #8042 showcasing their dedication to trucking and is open to anyone affiliated with the industry.

Launched in March, TMAF is an industry-wide image and internal education initiative informing policymakers, motorists and the public about the benefits of the trucking industry to help build the groundswell of political and grassroots support necessary to strengthen and grow the industry.

“We are 70% of the way to our goal of raising $1 million since our launch six months ago,” said Mike Card, fundraising chairman, Trucking Moves America Forward and president of Combined Transport. “These incredible results are a testament to the passion within trucking and we believe the ‘High-5 and Show Your Pride’ campaign will continue to energize, excite and inspire our industry at GATS and beyond. TMAF is a long-term movement and we aim to continue fundraising well past our goal.”

Attendees of GATS will be able to donate at the TMAF booth along with founding member American Trucking Associations (Booth #14059). Member companies will be easily identified via “High-5 and Show Your Pride” signage throughout the convention and those who donate will receive special recognition at the show as well as on TMAF social media and its website.

“We challenge the more than 40,000 attendees to continue celebrating and supporting the TMAF movement by participating in the ’High-5 and Show Your Pride‘ campaign at GATS,” said Steve Ponder, chairman, Trucking Moves America Forward and vice-president of Great West Casualty Company. “There would be nothing more exciting than moving closer to our goal with our friends and colleagues in Dallas.”

Significant landmarks to TMAF include reaching the half-million dollar donation mark two months after its launch thanks to major contributions from Allied Committee for the Trucking Industry, Cummins Inc., Great West Casualty Company, Jack Cooper Transportation, JJ Keller, Lipscomb & Pitts, Longistics, Love’s Travel Stops, Minnesota Trucking, NTTC, Old Dominion Freight Lines, Pilot Flying J, TAEC Region IV and Southeastern Freight Lines.

HENRY ALBERT AWARDED GARY KING MEMORIAL AWARD

Henry Albert, a fleet owner and professional driver, has been awarded the annual Gary King Memorial Trophy for his outstanding representation of the Trucker Buddy International program. Trucker Buddy International and the Iowa 80 Group in Walcott, Iowa, recognized Albert as “a stellar example of the superior and caring drivers who make the time to visit, teach and correspond with thousands of students throughout the year,” said Randy Schwartzenburg, executive director of Trucker Buddy International.

Albert has helped schoolteacher Rachael Tann and her second-grade students in Manheim, Pa, to better understand the trucking industry and how trucking impacts all of their lives while encouraging them to be excellent students and valuable community members.

Paul Abelson, an industry veteran, past board member and highly-revered writer and editor for numerous trucking publications, presented the award at the Super Truck Beauty Contest, part of Iowa 80’s Truckers Jamboree held annually in Walcott.

The award is named for the late Gary King who was the founder of Trucker Buddy International and the visionary who established the nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization in 1992. He dedicated the program to helping educate and mentor schoolchildren via a pen pal relationship between professional truck drivers and children in grades K-8. Trucker Buddy matches classes of students with professional truck drivers. Every week drivers share news about their travels with their class.

Albert is the owner of Albert Transportation of Statesville, N.C., and a current Trucker Buddy Ambassador as well as a member of the Freightliner Run Smart team.  He has been an industry-leading contributor to help improve aerodynamics and fuel efficiency for the trucking industry.

Since 1992, Trucker Buddy International has helped educate over a million schoolchildren and introduced them to caring, compassionate men and women, professional truck drivers.  The on-going success of the program is due to driver volunteers, participating teachers and the contributions of sponsors.  There is no cost to the drivers or teachers to participate in the program.  The Trucker Buddy program is funded entirely by sponsorships and donations. The TruckDriver.com Laptop Flashback Survey is closed. Here are the results:

Do you carry a laptop with you on the road?

Yes - 54%
No - 46%

We were curious, with the ever-increasing popularity of smart phones, to see how this one would come out. Especially since we asked this same question in the TruckDriver.com Laptop Survey back in 2007.

Here’s what you told us then:

Do you carry a laptop with you on the road?

Yes - 63%
No - 37%

We suspected the results this time around would be a little different from results in 2007. And, they were, just a little. We’ll check this one again in 2021!

In the meantime, take the TruckDriver.com OS Survey.

Until next time, keep on truckin’ and please drive safely.
