Carrier of the Month
Builders Transportation Company, LLC - BTC

Builders Transportation Company, LLC is a family owned and operated flatbed carrier that operates throughout the 48 contiguous states but primarily in the eastern two-thirds of the United States.

The Phillips family has operated the business since Frank Phillips purchased the six truck operation in 1961. Builders currently operates over 400 trucks with Mr. Phillips as President with his three sons, Frank JR., John Paul and Gene as Vice Presidents. The family owned and operated company has grown at an impressive rate by providing outstanding service to producers and consumers of coil steel, wire products, structural and sheet steel, aluminum products, building materials, cast iron and steel pipe. Builders is a core carrier for customers like Alcoa, American Cast Iron Pipe, Thomas and Betts and US Steel.

The Phillip’s family has recognized the need to adapt to the many changes that have affected the trucking industry. Mr. Phillips has said “the things that have made Builders successful in the past will not make Builders successful in the future”. Their goal is to provide safe, outstanding service to their customers at the lowest possible cost.

Safety is another top priority. BTC is safe in everything they do. No one will ever ask you to do anything unsafe at Builders.

Outstanding service comes from great drivers. The company has high expectations for their  drivers and offers a great pay package. The average professional company driver at Builders makes $1000 a week while owner ops average $1.80 per mile to the truck.  Builders has a fully automated dispatch process including Qualcomm. Builders also has a very low driver to dispatcher ratio where every professional driver is a name and not a truck number. The customer service department stays a day or two ahead of drivers, many times planning drivers on loads before they unload to minimize down time.

Minimizing cost includes operating late model, fuel efficient equipment, safely. Over the road breakdowns are extremely expensive. Builders maintains a late model fleet by trading road tractors every four years.

The Marketing Department’s strategy is to target large, financially secure shippers who have multiple locations. This strategy allows Builders to reload in the same place they unload!

"We have done our homework at Builders Transportation, and we look forward to many more years of stability and steady growth,” Phillips sums up, “We encourage drivers and owner operators who are in search of a strong, family-oriented carrier to give one of our recruiters a call.”

“If one of our company drivers or owner operators ever has a problem, he or she can talk directly with a Phillips. Our drivers are comfortable in knowing that we’ll be around for years to come, and that’s not something that every carrier can claim in today’s market.”

You work hard to support your family and equally important is the time that you spend with them. That’s why BTC drivers are home every weekend with their families. You work hard for your money as a flatbed driver. That’s why BTC gives you several ways to earn more.

In order for you to get home to see your family and the opportunity to earn more than the average driver you need to have reliable late model equipment. That’s why BTC strives to keep you up and going.

Last but not least, BTC believes in having a relationship with each one of their drivers. You are not just a truck number at BTC. Your identity is much greater than the number on that truck. Every driver has a life outside of the truck and BTC wants to help you make that life the best it can be!

"We have done our homework at Builders Transportation, and we look forward to many more years of stability and steady growth," says Frank Phillips. "We encourage company drivers and owner operators who are in search of a strong, family-oriented carrier to give one of our recruiters a call."

ATA Commits to Hiring 100,000 Veterans as Part of Hiring Our Heroes Initiative

American Trucking Associations announced it was committing on behalf of the trucking industry and its members to hire 100,000 veterans as part of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Hiring 500,000 Heroes campaign.

“There’s no higher calling for an American than to serve in our armed forces, and I’d like to think that driving a truck – delivering America’s most essential goods safely and efficiently is also a high calling,” said ATA President and CEO Bill Graves. “That’s why we’re so proud to be partnering with Hiring Our Heroes and committing on behalf of the trucking industry to hire 100,000 veterans over the next two years.”

Hiring Our Heroes launched in March 2011 as a nationwide initiative to help veterans and military spouses find meaningful employment. Working with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s vast network of state and local chambers and other strategic partners from the public, private, and non-profit sectors, the goal is to create a movement across America in hundreds of communities where veterans and military families return every day. Since the Hiring 500,000 Heroes initiative with Capital One was launched in March of 2012, more than 1,700 companies have committed to hire 585,000 veterans and military spouses. To date, there have been 369,000 confirmed hires.

“It is rare in business and in life to find an opportunity that is a win-win for all involved, but that’s what Hiring Our Heroes is – a win for those veterans returning from service looking to transition to civilian life and a win for the trucking industry which is desperate to find dedicated, hard-working and safety-minded people to fill many thousands of open positions as drivers or technicians,” said ATA Chairman Duane Long, chairman of Longistics, Raleigh, N.C.

“A strong trucking industry is critical to the growth of our country and our economy. ATA’s pledge to hire and support 100,000 veterans sets a tremendous example for others to follow,” said Eric Eversole, vice president at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and executive director of Hiring Our Heroes.

ATA and Hiring Our Heroes will use FASTPORT’s trucking track system as a single portal to help match veterans with fleets with openings.

“Trucking has always been a favorite industry for our veterans because they are already trained to succeed in many great career paths," said Bill McLennan, CEO of FASTPORT. “ATA’s leadership and call to action from its members demonstrate the industry's affinity for hiring veterans and we are honored to help our talented veterans find great careers with those great employers in the trucking industry.”

“As a veteran and a professional truck driver, I know that my fellow service members have what it takes – and what fleets are looking for – to safely move America’s freight,” said Alphonso Lewis, a professional driver with YRC Freight and an America’s Road Team Captain. “Driving a truck has been a tremendously rewarding career for me after my service ended and I know that there are thousands of potential drivers in our military just looking for the opportunity.”

Since 1933, American Trucking Associations has been the leading advocate for the trucking industry. Through a strong federation of state associations, affiliated conferences and individual members, ATA is committed to developing and advocating innovative, research-based policies that promote highway safety, security, environmental sustainability and profitability.

ATA’s professional staff works to educate policymakers and the general public about the essential role trucking plays in the economy, promote responsible policies to improve highway safety and advance the industry’s environmental goals.
