ATA, Healthy Trucker Expand Healthy Fleet Challenge in 2015

American Trucking Associations announced it was expanding its relationship with Healthy Trucker and expanding the Healthy Fleet Challenge to all its member companies.

“We saw in October atour annual MC&E how successful just a small-scale challenge was, so we wanted to expand it to all our members,” said ATA President and CEO Bill Graves. “The health and wellness of our members and their employees and drivers is very important, so this friendly competition will help people fulfill those New Year’s resolutions and get in shape in 2015.”

Starting now, ATA’s companies can not only compete with each other, but on behalf of the United States against fleets in Canada, making the challenge a truly international effort to energize the industry to get and stay healthy.

“I participated in the Healthy Fleet Challenge at MC&E and it was great fun,” said ATA Chairman Duane Long, chairman of Longistics, “so I encourage all my fellow ATA executives to join in the Challenge now.”

“Let's face it; the vast majority of us could stand to be more active. The Healthy Fleet Challenge is a fun and engaging way to get everyone moving – together,” said Glenn Caldwell, vice president of corporate development at Healthy Trucker. “Small changes to lifestyle – like this challenge – have a positive compounding effect over the long term.”

Women in Trucking Association Seeking Professional Drivers for 2015 Image Team

Women In Trucking Association (WIT) and Navistar, Inc. are seeking candidates for the 2015 Influential Woman In Trucking award.

Now in its fifth year, the award recognizes women who make or influence key decisions in a corporate, manufacturing, supplier, owner-operator, driver, sales or dealership setting. The winner must have a proven record of responsibility and have mentored or served as a role model to other women in the industry.

WIT and Navistar teamed up to develop this award in 2010 as a way to honor female leaders in trucking, and to attract and advance women within our industry. Winners have included Marcia Taylor, Bennett International Group; Rebecca Brewster, President and COO, American Transportation Research Institute; Joyce Brenny, President of Brenny Transportation; and Rochelle Bartholomew, CEO of CalArk International.

“This award has become a great platform to gain visibility for the leadership of women in trucking,” said Lisa Hartenberger, Director, Corporate Communications, Navistar.  “As we’ve recognized the contributions of women in our industry, we’ve also had the opportunity to build dialogue around ways to promote further diversity.”

Last year, nearly 100 women were nominated, representing a variety of leadership positions in the trucking industry.

“This award supports our mission to celebrate the success of women in the trucking industry by highlighting women who have been pioneers and role models for those of us working in the transportation careers,” said Ellen Voie, President and CEO, Women In Trucking.

Nominations will be accepted through January 31, 2015, at ww.influentialwomanintruckingaward.com.

The winner will be announced at the Truckload Carriers Association annual convention held in Orlando, Florida, March 8-11, 2015. If you nominate a candidate, please ask her to save the date for this event in case she is named a finalist.

WIT was established to encourage the employment of women in the trucking industry, promote their accomplishments and minimize obstacles faced by women working in the trucking industry. The purpose of the Image Team is to represent these goals while bringing awareness of the need for more women in the trucking industry and the obstacles that women face.

These female drivers will be the face of Women in Trucking by attending major truck shows, writing articles from their point of view, and conducting media interviews. They will speak articulately and enthusiastically about the trucking industry. These women will also serve as mentors for new Image Team members.

“We are often contacted by media for interviews and ride-alongs and are excited to be able to offer interview requests in the future with an Image Team ready to speak about the positive aspects of their jobs and the industry,” said Ellen Voie, President and CEO, Women In Trucking. “Women are still an anomaly as drivers and the media is often intrigued to learn more about the female drivers who are perceived as doing a ‘man’s job.’ These drivers will break that stereotype and will be role models for the women who enter the trucking industry in the future."

Eligibility to serve on the Image Team include holding a valid commercial driver’s license and be employed as a commercial motor vehicle driver. The driver must have an outstanding safety record and speak convincingly about her commitment to safety. She will represent the trucking industry’s best.

Nominations will be accepted through January 31, 2015. Applications can be found on the WIT website (http://womenintrucking.org/).

The top ten qualifying applications will participate in a selection interview in February. The 2015 Image Team will be announced at the Salute to Women Behind the Wheel event at the Mid-America Trucking Show held in Louisville, KY on March 28, 2015
