Elite Drivers Warn Motorists About the Dangers of Speed

Share the Road Professionals Remind Drivers to ‘Slow down and save a life’

Members of American Trucking Associations’ Share the Road program recently encouraged motorists to slow down while on the road in order to improve safety.

“Going too fast increases stopping distance and reduces your reaction time to avoid a crash,” said Share the Road Professional Paul Savill, a driver with UPS Freight from Hamilton, Ohio. “You may be tempted to go faster because you think your time is precious, it is not more precious than your life or the lives of others, slowing down can prevent crashes to ensure we all arrive safely at our destinations.”

Speeding or driving too fast for conditions is a factor in nearly a third of all fatal highway crashes, a figure that ATA and Share the Road are working to reduce.

“Whenever I’m out talking to drivers, I remind them that slowing down is an important part of sharing the road safely,” said ABF Freight Driver Bill West, a Share the Road professional from Roopville, Ga. “If we all showed a little more patience and care – and took our foot off the gas a little bit – we could reduce the number of crashes on our highways.”

Earlier this week, ATA renewed its calls for electronic speed limiters on all commercial vehicles and for a national speed limit of 65 miles per hour. For more information on speed or Share the Road, visit www.trucking.org or www.atastr.org, and to participate in the conversation socially, post with the hashtag #SlowDownSaveLives.

Share the Road is a highway safety outreach program of the American Trucking Associations that educates all drivers about sharing the roads safely with large trucks. An elite team of professional truck drivers with millions of accident-free miles deliver life-saving messages to millions of motorists annually. The safety program is sponsored by Mack Trucks Inc. and Michelin North America Inc. www.atastr.org.  Follow the Share the Road on Twitter and Facebook.

Truckload Carriers Association Named a Commemorative Partner
with the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration

On Friday, April 24th a special ceremony was held at the Truckload Carriers Association’s (TCA) headquarters recognizing that the organization has been selected as a Commemorative Partner with the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration. TCA was chosen because several of its members are donating their equipment and manpower to haul The Wall That Heals, a 250-foot replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and accompanying mobile education center, to various communities across America.

During the ceremony, TCA Chairman Keith Tuttle, TCA President Brad Bentley, and the TCA staff were shown a video about the importance of remembering the sacrifices of Vietnam Veterans. Then Larry M. Brom, acting director of the Department of Defense Office of Commemoration, presented a commemorative flag and the official certificate of partnership signed by the Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Tuttle said: "I remember the Vietnam War and its impact on all of us back home and especially to those veterans that returned. The trucking industry has a history of welcoming veterans into our ranks. We did so after Vietnam, and we are still working toward that legacy of service as we pledge to hire 50,000 veterans. As chairman of TCA, I am proud to be a Partner with the Vietnam War 50th Commemoration Committee as we work toward the common goal of recognizing service and sacrifice."

The Commemorative Partner Program is designed for federal, state and local communities, veterans' organizations and other nongovernmental organizations to assist a grateful nation in thanking and honoring Vietnam Veterans and their families. Commemorative Partners are encouraged to participate in the Commemoration of the Vietnam War by planning and conducting events and activities that will recognize Vietnam Veterans and their families' service, valor, and sacrifice.

"Patriotism and the trucking industry seem to go hand in hand,” said Bentley. “TCA is proud to be part of delivering the U.S. Capitol Christmas tree to Washington, D.C., supporting logistics for Wreaths Across America, and now bringing The Wall That Heals to our nation’s communities. We are pleased to join so many other Partners to honor our past and continue to promote the value and commitment of service."

Survey and Comments

Here’s where we are so far on the TruckDriver.com So Far Survey:

So far, there are four declared candidates running for President of the United States in 2016, who will win the vote?

Hillary Clinton - 43%
Ted Cruz - 17%
Rand Paul - 19%
Marco Rubio - 21%

That’s just about the way we would have called that one. Can’t wait to see who jumps in next.

In the meantime, if you read the article about driver-facing cameras you know where we’re headed with this one. It almost seems inevitable that cameras will eventually be installed on all commercial vehicles. As we’ve seen recently in the news, there is nothing quite as compelling or objective as raw video.

That takes us to the TruckDriver.com Big Brother Survey, say “Cheese!”

Keep on truckin’ and please drive safely.
