It’s unofficially Summer and while the temps haven’t yet begun to approach triple digits, there is no doubt they will. Here are five things you’ll need to know when the official Summer heats up.

Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of liquids, especially water. Drinks containing caffeine will only make you thirstier and while they taste good, they actually make you more dehydrated. Try freezing a bottle of water to have on hand for those extra hot days.

Say Stress Free: The summer heat only adds more stress when things go bad on the road. Plan your trips carefully. Avoid rush hours, long stretches of highway driving in the middle of the day and keep your emotions under control. Road rage is more frequent in the summer heat, avoid putting yourself in that position. Remember, the other guy is just as hot as your are.

Relax and Stretch: Take a little time to unwind. Find some shade or air conditioning and stretch your arms and legs every now then. Don’t hop out of the bunk and plop down behind the wheel. Give yourself a little time to think about the work day ahead.

Sunscreen: Use it! Recent reports reveal the cheaper the sunscreen the more effective. A small price to pay to avoid sunburn. Place a cool damp towel around your neck when fueling or doing your inspection. Stay cool!

Get Plenty of Rest: Being tired only makes you hotter. A good night’s sleep and a little nap in the afternoon will keep your energy from being zapped by the heat.

Elite Drivers Tout Importance of Good Roads to Safety
Share the Road Professionals Also Urge Caution in Construction Zones

Today, Elite drivers from American Trucking Associations’ Share the Road team said that well-maintained roads and bridges are important to highway safety.

“Good roads and bridges make it easier for professional drivers like me and everyday motorists to arrive at our destinations safely,” said Charlie Demchock, a Share the Road professional with Walmart Transportation. “Potholes, congestion and poorly marked roads make the important task of driving more difficult.”

Late last month (http://trck.ng/HiwayBill), ATA called on Congress to pass a long-term highway bill to address the condition of the nation’s roads and bridges.

“While good roads are important to safety, it is also important to drive carefully when those roads are being worked on,” said Richie Buitrago, a Share the Road professional with Con-way Freight. “Slowing down and being alert in construction zones is a great way to keep not only motorists, but the men and women working on our highways safe.”

Share the Road is a highway safety outreach program of the American Trucking Associations that educates all drivers about sharing the roads safely with large trucks. An elite team of professional truck drivers with millions of accident-free miles deliver life-saving messages to millions of motorists annually.

The safety program is sponsored by Mack Trucks Inc. and Michelin North America Inc. Follow Share the Road on Twitter and Facebook.

Survey and Comments

The TruckDriver.com Brave New World Survey has concluded and the results are really no surprise.

However, knowing truck drivers the way we do, we just gotta believe that about half of the 60% that said they would leave trucking if dual-facing cameras were made mandatory, really wouldn’t.

Anyway, here’s the breakdown:

Imagine a law is passed making dual-facing cameras mandatory on all commercial motor vehicles, what will you do?

Learn to live with it and continue driving - 27%

Try it for awhile before deciding what to do - 14%

Turn in my CDL and look for another line of work - 60%

Speaking of leaving, what about your current driving job? Take the TruckDriver.com Movin’ On Survey and let us know if you’re in the market for a new driving job.
