Another way to make a little extra cash in 2017?

If the experts are right, 2017 will be a busy year for the trucking industry. Freight is expected to increase in the coming year which means the need for qualified, professional truck drivers will increase as well.

That’s good news for those of you working for carriers offering a Driver Referral Bonus.

Most carriers offer some type of Referral Bonus to their drivers and the best part is, it's easy to make. All you have to do is refer another driver to your company and if he or she gets hired, you get paid. It's that simple.

From what we've seen, carriers are offering anywhere from $500.00 to $1,000.00 in Driver Referral Bonus payments. If you only bring in one driver a month that could mean an extra twelve grand a year in your pocket - and with that you could get a couple of really nice pockets!

Here are a few tips that will give you an inside track on how to take full advantage of your company's driver referral program:

  • Always carry a handful of your company's driver applications in the truck with you. You never know when another driver might ask about applying. Make sure you put your full name and truck number in the "Referred by" space on every application.

  • Memorize the toll free recruiting number. If another driver seems genuinely interested in hiring on, tell him or her to call and mention your name. Also, it's a good idea to get the full name of the driver you are referring, that way you can follow up with the recruiting department to see if he or she has been hired.

  • If you carry a laptop or smartphone, bookmark your company’s website so you can easily access the driver recruiting page when talking with an interested driver.

  • Develop a relationship with one of the recruiters inside, perhaps the recruiter who hired you. Make them your point of contact for referring drivers and following up on applicants. They can also keep you abreast of any changes taking place in the company.

Recruiters really are interested in helping you recruit other drivers; it makes their job that much easier.

If your company offers a Driver Referral Bonus and you're not taking advantage of it, then you're missing out on a very real source of extra income.

Next time you're by the terminal, stop in and visit with the Recruiting Manager, get the details on the Referral Bonus and pick up some applications, you'll be glad you did.

Former National Professional Driver of the Year Named TCA Highway Angel

Brian O’Leary, a professional truck driver for O’Leary’s Truck Service LLC, of Fort Collins, Colorado, has been named a Highway Angel by the Truckload Carriers Association (TCA). He is being recognized for helping save a man who suffered a heart attack while driving.

On the morning of August 3, 2016, O’Leary was driving westbound on Interstate 80 near Maxwell, Nebraska. He noticed a straight truck drift into the median with no brake lights shining. The truck then smashed into the guardrails of the upcoming overpass, swerved into the westbound fast lane, and stopped. O’Leary slowed past the accident to park and looked over to see that the driver was unconscious. He called 911 from his headset and ran to the other truck. When he checked on the driver he was unable to find a pulse. O’Leary continued to talk to 911 and quickly unbuckled the man and pulled him from the truck onto the ground.

He performed CPR for over four minutes. “That was the longest 4 minutes of my life,” O’Leary said. Shortly thereafter, an EMT arrived along with another passerby with a medical background, and the three continued administering CPR until an ambulance arrived. After shocking the driver with a defibrillator, they were able to get a pulse and transported him to the hospital. Several hours later O’Leary was notified that the man had survived.

“Hearing that the man pulled through, that brought me to tears,” said O’Leary.

Since the accident, O’Leary has spoken with the driver and his family and learned that the man had suffered a heart attack while he was driving. They are forever grateful to O’Leary for springing into action and helping to save the driver’s life.

O’Leary has been driving for 44 years, and in 2004 he was named the Company Driver of the Year on behalf of TCA.

For his willingness to help his fellow driver, TCA has presented O’Leary with a certificate, patch, lapel pin, and truck decals. O’Leary’s Truck Service LLC also received a certificate acknowledging Brian O’Leary as a Highway Angel.

EpicVue sponsors TCA’s Highway Angel program. Since the program’s inception in August 1997, hundreds of drivers have been recognized as Highway Angels for the exemplary kindness, courtesy, and courage they have shown others while on the job.

We’ve punched the last ticket on the TruckDriver.com Showtime Survey and here’s what your review.

When was the last time you watched a movie in a theater?

Last Week - 14%
Last Month - 15%
Last Year - 24%
Can’t remember - 47%

Looks like half of you have been out to the movies fairly recently, the other half not in a while. We haven’t been ourselves for quite some time!

We have, however, been out on the road and have seen fuel prices all over the place. Which brings us to the TruckDriver.com Back in the Day Survey.

Until next time, keep on truckin’ and please drive safely.
