Anthony Spero
Trucker Buddy of the Month
July 2013

ABF Freight Systems driver and America’s Road Team Captain Anthony Spero has been named July Trucker Buddy of the Month following his nomination by Sara Dixon and Emily Schimelman, teachers at Hamden Hal County Day School, in Hamden, Conn.  Both teachers had the following to say about their long term Trucker Buddy.

“Anthony has been our Trucker Buddy for the past 14 years and has been 100 percent committed to being the most amazing trucker buddy to our fourth graders,” they said. “In his letters, he has taught us about the trucking industry, truck safety, and has shared his love of his family with us. He ends all of his letters with an inspirational message, ‘Keep reading and learning.’

According to Dixon and Schimelman, each school year culminates with Spero visiting Hamden Hall. “The children are always eager and excited to meet him after all the months of writing. This year was particularly special it seemed to our children. For example, one child wrote in his letter to Anthony that he had always wanted to meet with a famous truck driver and invited him to sit with him at lunch,” they said. “Anthony speaks with sincerity and with a true interest in listening to the children. We all adore and love Anthony!”

Some students wrote letters to show how much they care for their Trucker Buddy Anthony:

“I think Anthony Spero should be the Trucker Buddy of the Month.  He is the best person I have ever met and is so dedicated to following his goals and does what’s right.  He is nice and let us sit in his truck and honk his horn!”

“Anthony Spero cares about safety and is patient and kind. He is the only truck driver in Connecticut to win nationals twice and encourages us to get good grades.  Best of all he is fun!”

“Mr. Spero has been trucking for over 30 years and is nice, fun and has been coming to the school for 10 years.  He has won safety awards. This is why I think he should be the Trucker Buddy of the Month.”

Since 1992, Trucker Buddy International has helped educate over a million schoolchildren and introduced them to caring, compassionate men and women, professional truck drivers.  The on-going success of the program is due to driver volunteers, participating teachers and the contributions of sponsors.  There is no cost to the drivers or teachers to participate in the program. The Trucker Buddy of the Month is sponsored by Daimler Truck Products and includes, Freightliner Trucks, Western Star Trucks, Detroit and Progressive Commercial Insurance. Each class of the winning TBOM receives a gift pack of snacks from Frito-Lay.  The Trucker Buddy program is funded entirely by sponsorships and donations.
