Are You Ready to Truck?

02/15/2023

What kind of truck driving job are you looking for? There are many different types of carriers offering many different types of opportunities for truck drivers - long-haul, short-haul, local, regional, dedicated, solo, team, owner-operator - what kind of truck driving job are you looking for?

Long-haul Truck Driving Jobs - By far and away, long-haul drivers are in the highest demand and the majority of truck driving school graduates are hired by long-haul carriers. Long-haul over-the-road drivers run coast to coast and are typically gone from home for two to three weeks at a time. Long-haul runs range from 500 to 1000 miles in length. Team operations can be much longer.

Short-haul Truck Driving Jobs - Short-haul drivers typically run in a 500 to 800 mile radius and are usually gone from home for up to a week at a time.

Regional Truck Driving Jobs - Regional drivers generally run in a specific area around the terminal and can be home a couple of times a week. Regional runs are usually 500 miles in length, but can be longer depending on customer requests.

Local Truck Driving Jobs - Local drivers are usually home every night or every other night and often deal with the same customers every day. Depending on the type of operation, local drivers are often paid hourly or may be salaried. There is a lot of competition among drivers for local jobs and carriers almost always hire experienced truck drivers for these positions, it is highly unlikely that a recent truck driving school graduate will be considered for a local driving job.

Dedicated Truck Driving Jobs - As the name implies, these drivers are assigned to a single customer and typically travel the same route every trip. Dedicated runs are usually time-sensitive and often involve a relay system where drivers meet each other at a specified time and location to swap loads. Dedicated runs require superior customer service and often the customer will demand that drivers on these runs meet their own hiring and safety standards. Again, it is highly unlikely that a recent truck driving school graduate will be considered for a dedicated run.
