The First Labor Day
09/01/2018
Here’s hoping you have a safe and relaxing Labor Day Weekend!
For those of you interested, here’s a little Labor Day history.
The First Labor Day
The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883.
In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, as originally proposed, and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a "workingmen's holiday" on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country. It’s not only Labor Day, it’s back-to-school time. Many schools around the country have already started and the rest will begin this coming week. That means school buses and school children are back on the road.
Every school year we hear about crashes involving a school bus. Unfortunately, some involve big trucks.
According to the American Automobile Association, (AAA) all drivers need to be extra aware this time of year. AAA has these back-to-school safety reminders for all drivers.
- Slow down near schools and residential areas.
- Always look for school buses loading and unloading students.
- Look between parked cars.
- Drive with headlights on, even during the day so you are more visible to children.
Remember to practice extra caution in school zones during bad weather.
